OKR (Objectives/key results) are quite obvious and easily explained in a short blog post.The book basically just says prioritize, take care of goal conflicts, have some safe, some stretch and limit your goals.None of the stories tell what problem OKRs actually solved, how the right OKRs where found and if OKRs made a difference at all. The book does neither give a framework nor an actionable approach to triage the right things to measure.If the objective of this book is to help people utilizing OKRs in practice, the (key) result is a spectacular failure.
Die Überschrift ist ein bisschen irreführend : "what matters" kommt zu kurz, die Beschreibung, wer OKRs benutzt und wie es dazu kam, gerät zu lang. Das mag sich kurzweilig lesen, allein: meine Erwartungshaltung ging klar in die Richtung, mehr darüber zu erfahren, wie man OKRs einführt, welche Schwierigkeiten wie aus dem Weg geräumt werden (können), welche Stolpersteine sich stellen usw.Insofern ist es, bestenfalls, zur Hälfte ein Sachbuch - der andere Part betrifft (interessante) Stories aus dem Leben erfolgreicher Unternehmenslenker. Deswegen hätte ich das Buch aber keinesfalls erworben.

Anekdote hier, Anekdote da, und bloß viele Seiten füllen.Einen Kern gibt es aber auch bei John Doerrs "Measure what matters": Wenn es ein Ziel sein soll, muss es akzeptiert erstellt und gemessen werden. Transparent, priorisiert, ambitioniert und konkret sowie nicht fürs Quartalresultat oder das Manager-Ego zurechtgebogen. Schlüsselergebnisse helfen, den Weg zur Zielerreichung Stück für Stück zu prüfen. Mit Peter Drucker & Co. herrscht dabei der schlichte "Macher"-Schwerpunkt. Das Umsetzen sei es.Das hätte auch viel kürzer beschrieben sein können. In der verbliebenen Zeit hätte Doerr einmal darüber nachdenken können, wie man Nichtmessbares doch abbildet (demokratisches gerechtes Arbeitsklima, Nachhaltigkeit und Sinn des Betriebs, ...). Drei Sterne.
Das Buch beschreibt die Methodik OKR (Objektives and Key Results) in einfachen Worten mit vielen Beispielen für damit umgesetzte Erfolge. In der Tat funktioniert die Methodik weit besser als MBO, weil sie für alle Beteiligten transparenter ist. Lesens- und umsetzenswert!
What a great book. A Manager's dream. Full of great stories and insights from John Doerr. The formatting is nice too. Very recommended.
Great book ! Insights about planning and execution from the likes of Intel, Google and the Gates Foundation. It is an easy read and it is quite persuasive about the utility of OKRs. It does't just tell you how to plan OKRs but also how to execute and keep track of your progress.
