Most people unfamiliar with data warehousing methods think it is simply "cloning" data. As the president of a company who implements data warehouses, we concur with Mr. Kimball and the fact that data warehousing is a "process" and the users of the data warehouse are the single most important criteria to building it. After reading the comments from other buyers I bought this book and was not disappointed. In a clear, concise matter all aspects of setting the scene and building a DWH are covered. Especially the pitfalls and dangers are always mentioned clearly and add up to all the experience I gained in the field of BI. CD ROM also very helpful. Like others I also would value more practical examples, so I am going to order the Data Warehouse Toolkit from same authors.
His first book, The Data Warehouse Toolkit, reads like an abstract to this one. I am close to the end of my data warehouse project and I have figured out most of the secrets myself, but I find The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit of even greater value now that I actually understand it. It is concise, maybe a little too complete - it even covers interviewing techniques - and summarizes everything I have read during the last couple of month in various database journals about data warehousing. Here is everything you need to know about managing the development project, designing, implementing and running a data warehouse.

Kimball's discussion of the data warehouse bus is particularly useful now that data marts are exploding all over the enterprise.Definitely add this book to your library, but beware that you will probably want additional references dealing with SMP, MPP, and NUMA platforms in more detail. This advanced book by Ralph, which continues on themes that he presented in the Data Warehouse Toolkit, covers advanced topics such as how to deal with "monster" and heterogeneous dimensions besides giving us more details on aggregations.This is the only book I have seen so far that deals with Lifecyle issues DW concretely.My only complaint is that this book does not discuss projects such as the ones in his DW Toolkit book that made it so popular.
I must say - this is number 1 for DW project manager. I wish i had this book for 3 years, then my success in this field could be much, much bigger. But anyway, i will recommend for new project managers only this one. I have lot of DW book at home, but there is no better choice.
